Degenerative Myelopathy Test?
Author: Kevin Curran, 2/2009
(excerpted from article link above) "There is no meaningful data for the OFA DNA test for DM in the Bernese Mountain Dog.
It has not been shown to be associated with DM in the BMD; and there are too few samples evaluated to begin to draw conclusions regarding the applicability of this test in the BMD."
It is important to note that there are a large number of dogs that have tested as genetically affected using the OFA DNA test for DM, but are reported as clinically normal by their owners. Dogs that tested positive may or may not develop DM or clinical signs as they get older.
Owners of affected BMD's (progressive rear end ataxia) are encouraged to contact researchers to participate in research studies. Contact Joan R. Coates, DVM,. She can be reached at CoatesJ@missouri.edu
